Available, 19.6 kW dual onboard chargers-more powerful than most Level 2 home solutions-let the Ford recharge from 15% to 100% in as little as eight hours. There are two battery choices, the standard 98 kWh unit with 230 miles of EPA-estimated range or the larger 131-kWh pack with 320. It’s a handsome truck, too, with a pearlescent ribbon of LED lighting around its nose, “Lightning” body badging, red LED lighting striping the tailgate, and aerodynamic 18-, 20- or 22-inch wheels. With standard underbody skid plates, 8.9-inches of ground clearance and an off-road driving mode, the Ford can handle surprisingly tough adventures, tow up to 10,000 pounds, and carry up to 2,235 pounds in its versatile cargo bed. Surging with capability, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning can cover 320 miles with its Extended Range battery, and rocket to 60 mph in under five seconds on a wave of power, with up to 580 horses and 775 pound-feet of torque. The Lightning takes further advantage of its EV design with the industry’s largest “frunk,” capable of securely storing a week’s worth of family luggage. Unlike these, the Lightning looks and feels just like a regular F-150 in all the important ways, with the same bed, cabin, tech features and utilitarian handiness. Chevy’s Silverado EV is still two years away. ![]() The Hummer EV is a big heavy lifestyle toy. ![]() The Rivian R1T is a smaller, more luxury-oriented product. There aren’t any other trucks quite like the Lightning yet, either. All told, it’s a relaxing joy to drive, with sports-car-like acceleration, and effortless power. That titanic power lets the Extended-Range Lightning bolt to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, or a still-blazing 5.0 seconds for the Standard Range model, itself with 452 horsepower and the identical 775 pound-feet. This rapid progress is silent, with a creampuff ride and confident handling, thanks to a lithium-ion battery slung below the floor (between high-strength steel frame rails) and an independent rear suspension that’s a first for an F-150. This, in a full-size, five-passenger pickup with 580 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque. It’ll cost 40% less to maintain over five years or 75,000 miles too, according to Ford. There are zero tailpipe emissions and at 70 e in city or highway driving, its energy costs are a fraction of those in any regular truck. ![]() The standard F-Series is a fine truck, but the Lightning is better-in lots of ways. The arrival of the F-150 Lightning is proof that the clock is ticking on gas-powered cars and trucks.
